Q: What's the most interesting project you've worked on at IV?
I have worked on many interesting projects during my time at IV. If I had to choose, my most interesting work has been with our Licensing Team. I have spent most of my career in mergers and acquisitions, so the opportunity to act as the primary Finance liaison and subject matter expert on licensing and other business development initiatives is fascinating.
Q: How is working at IV different from previous work you've done in your field?
Coming from a technology mergers and acquisitions background, I arrived at IV with intangible asset experience which included some patent experience. Focusing entirely on this relatively new and growing asset class is very different from the work I have done in the past. It makes coming to work fun and interesting.
Q: In what ways have you had an opportunity to grow new skills?
Both of my roles at IV have contributed to the development of my soft skills (managing up, working cross-collaboratively, etc.) as well as my technical skills (patent knowledge, patent licensing, etc.). While at times the pace at IV can be challenging, the constant stretching and testing have and continue to significantly contribute to my career maturation.
Q: How do you approach new challenges and opportunities?
We are encouraged and empowered to operate beyond our traditional functional responsibilities. It is not enough to raise issues about why we can’t or shouldn’t do something –rather, we must arrive at the table offering solutions.
IV is an organization that expects positive outcomes, so the best part of my job is bringing creative solutions to challenging problems.
Q: What do you do to help IV accomplish our mission of being the leader in the business of invention?
When I engage in activities and projects, I make sure that I am “solution focused, ” or that I leverage the base of knowledge around me to look for new ways of doing things, and finally that I spend most of my time on activities that move the needle.
Q: How do you see IV's values (integrity, pioneering spirit, knowledge, inventiveness, patience, passion)integrity, pioneering spirit, knowledge, inventiveness, patience, passion)integrity, pioneering spirit, knowledge, inventiveness, patience, passion)integrity, pioneering spirit, knowledge, inventiveness, patience, passion) play out on a regular basis?
I see these values all the time at IV. We hire smart people who are motivated to ensure that IV becomes the leader in the business of invention, but are committed to doing so with integrity and respect - all of which are embodied in our values.
Q: Which value do you need to embrace most in your job? Which value inspires you the most?
Integrity is the value I embrace most in my job. Our investors rightfully expect that we will steadfastly adhere to high professional standards and I believe that as a member of the Finance team, it is my responsibility to act and engage in a manner that supports this.
With respect to which value inspires me the most in my job, I would have to say “pioneering spirit.” IV is an organization that expects positive outcomes, so the best part of my job is bringing creative solutions to challenging problems.
Q: Describe your role in providing guidance to the business leaders and founders.
In my role, I need to provide clear and consistent reporting, feedback and insight on Licensing and other transactions to senior management upon which they can rely to make informed decisions.
