Global IP Updates

March 1, 2013

Intellectual Ventures is a global business, so it's important for us to keep an eye on key developments around the world.

For this month’s News You Can Use, let’s take a look at what’s shifting in the IP landscape worldwide:

  • On February 19, 24 of the 27 member states of the European Union signed the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPC). The UPC is designed to provide a one-stop shop for registering and protecting patents within the European Union. Since patent applications will no longer need to be filed or defended in each of the EU member states in the local language, the unified patent system is expected to save significant time and money for inventors.
  • Thomson Reuters published a global research report on the “BRICK” nations (Brazil, Russia, China and South Korea), noting their growing influence on the global economy. The study analyzed patent filings, research publications, human capital and R&D spending to capture a better benchmark of their progress from “emerging to established” markets.
  • The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) released the IP Awareness Assessment Tool. This online tool is designed to help American manufacturers, small businesses, entrepreneurs and independent inventors evaluate their IP asset awareness and provide training resources specific to their business needs.
