July 25, 2011 TAOYUAN, Taiwan and BELLEVUE, Wash.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. (CPT) and Intellectual Ventures (IV®) announced today that they have entered into a set of multi-faceted intellectual property agreements.

Chunghwa Picture Tubes Ltd. (CPT) and Intellectual Ventures (IV®) announced today that they have entered into a set of multi-faceted intellectual property agreements.

In addition to a licensing agreement that grants CPT access to IV's portfolio of more than 35,000 IP assets, the agreements enable CPT to draw upon IV's brainpower and resources by collaborating with IV's network of inventors to develop and acquire rights to the IP that could help differentiate CPT's future products. IV's invention network includes more than 3,000 inventors in ten countries. IV will also provide access to its own dedicated in-house group of inventors. CPT is one of Taiwan's leading developers of LCD display technologies.

As part of this set of agreements, CPT also gains membership in IV's IP for Defense program and access to broad areas of strategic cooperation. For customers accused of patent infringement, IV's IP for Defense program provides them with the ability to obtain patents from IV's portfolio to support counter-assertion, enabling more efficient negotiations in order to reduce liabilities and achieve favorable licensing terms.

“As a company dedicated to the manufacturing of display devices, CPT has always respected the rules and regulations with regard to intellectual property rights (IPR),” said Dr. Jang-Jeng Liang, Chief Technology Officer at CPT. “In recent years, with the rapid advancement in display technologies; the role played by IPR has become increasingly important. To prevent potential future IPR disputes from affecting the competitiveness of our products, we not only worked to enhance our own ability to create IP, but have also entered into contract with Intellectual Ventures (IV) to strengthen our position in IPFD (IP for Defense) and in IP negotiations in order to decrease potential losses to the company. By working with IV, we also hope to improve our IP portfolio for future technology products, and reach a long-term, win-win and mutually beneficial working relationship.”

“Our agreement with CPT demonstrates their visionary stance among Taiwanese companies when it comes to IP strategy,” said Don Merino, senior vice president, global licensing sales at Intellectual Ventures. “Not only are we working with them to address current IP needs and assist them with monetizing assets in their portfolio, but together we're launching a collaborative long-term relationship to invest in key future technologies. Innovative companies around the world are taking advantage of the many ways we can assist with their IP strategies, and we expect that trend to increase in the coming years.”

Intellectual Ventures engages with companies of all sizes to meet their current business needs and provide strategic guidance on forward-thinking intellectual property. IV combines scale and expertise to structure sophisticated deals designed to help companies strengthen their market position by reducing their current risk and providing access to the invention rights they need to stay competitive.
