Expanding Your Horizons

IV Role Models STEM for Young Women

Instilling the knowledge that everyone (male or female) has the capacity to succeed in STEM.

Great STEM minds think like girls. That's why IV is proud to sponsor Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)—committing both financial resources and volunteers to help give young women opportunities to learn from female STEM mentors.

Thousands of teenaged girls in Seattle and Bellevue, Wash., are discovering how rewarding science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) can be—thanks to dozens of mentors who volunteer their time and expertise to help girls transform their enthusiasm for STEM into rewarding careers.

Intellectual Ventures sponsors regional EYH conferences for middle- and high school-aged girls, and our employees—from scientists to patent attorneys—participate by leading hands-on workshops, such as:

  • Invent this! Learn how great new ideas are developed and patented.
  • Lean, mean, manufacturing machine: Learn business, consulting, and manufacturing skills.
  • Mini Me: How did we get from room size computers to powerful but small computing tablets?

"I have two engineering degrees and definitely experienced both encouragement and skepticism when I chose my college majors," said Shirley Heath, senior director of strategic business development at IV. “I’m glad that I can help give girls today the encouragement they need to pursue engineering and other scientific fields.”
