magicJack VocalTec Becomes IV’s latest customer

Today marks another milestone in a long relationship between Intellectual ventures and magicJack VocalTec. In 2008, VocalTec (prior to its merger with magicJack) sold a number of patents to an Intellectual Ventures company. Today, we’ve signed a licensing agreement and sold one of those original patents back to magicJack VocalTec.

Intellectual Ventures Signs Cavium as Latest Licensing Customer

Intellectual Ventures announced today that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for networking, communications and the digital home. The agreement provides Cavium with access to relevant segments of IV’s growing portfolio of nearly 40,000 patent assets, across more than 50 technology areas. Cavium also has the option to become a member of IV's IP-for-Defense (IPFD) program to help minimize risk of future litigation and maintain its focus on innovation.

Earlier this week it was announced that Cypress Semiconductor is our newest licensing customer. A billion dollar annual business, Cypress is a leading semiconductor design and manufacturing company with a history of invention and a deep appreciation for the value of intellectual property. This agreement provides Cypress with access to segments of IV’s growing portfolio, and establishes a long-term relationship which allows for further IP transactions and cooperation in the future.

IV Signs Nanya Technology Corporation as Latest Customer

We just announced that Nanya Technology Corporation is our newest licensing customer, joining some of the world’s leading semiconductor memory companies among our growing list of customers, including Samsung and Micron. Today’s deal provides Nanya with a license to segments of IV’s extensive patent portfolio, which includes more than 35,000 assets in more than 50 technology sectors. As a result of the agreement, the current ITC dispute between the parties has been amicably resolved to their mutual benefit.

Wistron Corporation Becomes Newest Intellectual Ventures Customer

Today we announced our newest customer, Wistron, a Taiwanese company that is one of the world’s largest original design manufacturers (ODM) in the information communications technology space. What does that mean? When you buy an electronic device like a notebook PC, mobile phone or LCD TV, there is a good chance it was manufactured by a company like Wistron and then marketed and sold under another company’s brand name.

This morning we added another major tech company to our roster of licensing customers. Micron Technology, Inc. is one of the world’s leading inventors and producers of memory and semiconductor technologies, and it’s also the last remaining US-based manufacturer of DRAM (a type of memory for computers, video games and all sorts of electronic devices).

Leveling the Playing Field with Patents for Defensive Purposes

Today we announced a new customer, Dashwire, which creates mobile and web applications for easy setup, data backup and photo/video sharing between mobile devices. Dashwire is a young and successful company faced with litigation from a much larger competitor. By becoming an IV customer, Dashwire has established a foundation of patent coverage and also acquired patents to use for defensive purposes. As we wrote last week, with thousands of patents related to mobile devices, it’s no surprise that there’s patent infringement litigation in every part of the industry, from software and hardware to features and functions.

IV Signs Another Customer in the Mobile Telecoms Industry

In the past few years, as the smartphone industry has surged and new operating systems have begun competing with the established market players, the industry has seen an increase in litigation commonly referred to in the press as “smartphone wars.” Why has this happened? The reality is that as devices get more and more complex and contain even more features, no single company can own all the patents relevant to technology within an average mobile device. In fact, it’s been estimated that the average smartphone contains thousands of patents relating to software, hardware, messaging, connectivity and more.
