Top stories from January: How challenging assumptions leads to breakthroughs

Renowned professor and biologist Uri Alon once said, “In order to discover something truly new, at least one of your basic assumptions has to change.” This creative and outside-the-box thinking that scientific discovery demands is not an easy feat to achieve. It requires us to abandon a preconceived notion and embrace a new framework for looking at a problem.

Metamaterials Momentum: IV Spinout Kymeta

Nathan Myhrvold once described metamaterials as the closest thing to magic he’s ever seen. And if IV spinout Kymeta’s recent success is any measure, magic is something that the market can get behind. It’s been quite a year for the company, so we thought we’d take some time to highlight just a few of the ways Kymeta’s technology is making an impact.

Kymeta Wins Manufacturing Award

Despite incredible advances in the last decade, satellite communications still frequently fail to deliver dependable Internet access, particularly while people are on the move - think planes, trains, boats, and automobiles. Historically, satellite communications required physical mechanisms to constantly steer an antenna in order to maintain a link with satellites. This is not a simple operation at a speed of 5 knots or 500 mph.

Dr. David R. Smith Joins IV to Commercialize Metamaterials Inventions

Intellectual Ventures has the world’s leading portfolio of metamaterials intellectual property thanks in part to work with pioneers in the field like Duke University’s Dr. David R. Smith and Imperial College’s Sir John Pendry. After almost a decade of development in this area, we launched a spin-out company – Kymeta Corporation – to commercialize the metamaterials satellite antenna designed and prototyped in our lab. While Kymeta marked an important step for our work, our pipeline of metamaterials inventions didn’t stop with satellite antennas.

Embracing the Challenge

The first time I saw IV Lab’s Newton building four and half years ago, it was basically just a warehouse full of miscellaneous parts and equipment. I was there to interview with a company I’d never heard of – Intellectual Ventures – for a job no one could really define for me. Some of the people I met with envisioned the Lab eventually employing one or two dozen people. On the other hand, Nathan Myhrvold threw down the challenge to build something as significant as Bell Labs. If they had outlined a clear plan to transform that warehouse into a working invention lab, I probably wouldn’t have taken the job. Instead, what I got was a challenge to build something new that could have a huge impact on technology, invention and maybe even the world. At its core, that’s what IV is all about.

IV reveals metamaterial-based satellite communications user terminal technology at Satellite 2011

On Wednesday, March 16, Russell Hannigan, director of business development at IV®, spoke about some of IV’s work in the metamaterials space and revealed for the first time a project to develop technology for a new kind of flat and thin antenna optimized for mobile broadband satellite communications, such as for boats, planes and other vehicles. Unlike all other competing products that require complicated motors to steer the antenna physically so that it remains locked on the satellite, IV’s Metamaterial Surface Antenna Technology (MSA-T) is designed to steer a radio frequency beam electronically. Eliminating the motors greatly simplifies the user terminal, leading potentially to an order of magnitude reduction in size, weight, power and cost.
