The Kuwait International Law School Signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Intellectual Ventures

The Kuwait International Law School (“KILAW”) seeks to build an innovation center and an additional center for excellence in intellectual property for the investment in and development of a marketplace of ideas in Kuwait.

It was announced on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 that the Kuwait International Law School (“KILAW”) seeks to build an innovation center and an additional center for excellence in intellectual property for the investment in and development of a marketplace of ideas in Kuwait as well as the realization of the goals set for the country in the area of excellence, including knowledge and technology transfer.

The law school announced in a press release that it signed, along with the Kuwait International Legal Research Center (“KILRC”), a memorandum of understanding with Intellectual Ventures, one of the largest private innovation companies in the world, based in Seattle, Washington area, focusing on investments in innovation and intellectual property asset management.

The law school added that “invention sessions will be organized to address issues on a national level, such as the oil lakes, and to bring together the leading industrial minds for the development of new inventions in the Intellectual Ventures laboratory. The parties will also pursue Ministry of Commerce’s initiatives that are related to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, solar and alternative energy as well as the industrial sectors. The memorandum of understanding will provide small and medium-sized Kuwaiti enterprises the opportunity to access Intellectual Ventures’ approximately 35,000 intellectual property asset through the provision of intellectual property licenses.”

Dr. Mohamed AlMoqatei, the President and Dean of the Kuwait International Law School, said that “the signed agreement with Intellectual Ventures provides the law school with an important opportunity to directly influence the inventions landscape in Kuwait. The law school considers this agreement as the culmination of the its interest in introducing international dimensions to the legal education offered to students.”

Nathan Myhrvold, Founder and CEO of Intellectual Ventures said, “With this partnership, KILAW will secure its position as a future-focused and innovative educational leader among law schools in the GCC. Through this MOU, IV will contribute to the national conversation about invention in Kuwait and explore avenues for international collaboration and support of the national SME sector.”
